2022 NFL Raiders preview, schedule: Davante Adams among Las Vegas Super Bowl contenders

After Jon Gruden left due to off-pitch scandal last season, the Raiders were to go down resoundingly. At week 14, these predictions seemed to be coming true, but under interim tenure of Rich Bisaccia, Las Vegas won the last four games on the schedule to reach the playoffs. As the 2022 season approaches, owner Mark Davis is eager to see the franchise back in the playoffs and maybe challenge for the Super Bowl.

Davante Adams gives Raiders advantage

Due to the uncertainty surrounding Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau Fieldthe Raiders pulled out all the stops get Davante Adams through an exchange. The move was widely anticipated as the star receiver shared a locker room with Derek Carr at Fresno State and had previously expressed a desire to reunite with the quarterback.

To take advantage of all the offensive potential that Adams represents, Bisaccia was not renewed and Davis opted to bring in former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. In McDaniels’ total 13 seasons in New England, Tom Brady added 3,704 completions, 43,003 yards and 315 touchdowns as well as two MVPs and three Super Bowls. On the other hand, McDaniels’ only previous experience as a head coach was not brilliant: he led the Broncos 28 games with an 11-17 record.

With Adams on board, Carr (4,804 yards, 23 TDs, 14 interceptions in 2021) will have a receiving cast led by the former Packer and Darren Waller, with the support of Hunter Renfrow, Keelan Cole and Josh Jacobs.

On the defensive front, where the Raiders ranked 14th in 2021 in giving up 5,732 yards, the franchise has grown stronger in two ways: Las Vegas has signed 16 players in total with Chandler Jones the most important piece of the puzzle (he will team up with Maxx Crosby in the pass rush); in the draft, the Raiders picked up defensive tackles Neil Farrell and Matthew Butler to shore up a unit that gave up 1,943 rushing yards in 2021 (19th in the league).

The Raiders face a tough road to the Super Bowl

Despite McDaniels’ project appearing well fleshed out and containing the necessary elements to win in the NFC, there are two factors that will complicate the Raiders’ campaign.

The first is the AFC West. The division has been dominated in recent years by the Chiefs, but the Chargers have started to put pressure on (signings of JC Jackson and Khalil Mack will toughen up their defense); also, the Broncos acquired Russell Westbrook and Denver resumed a prominent role in the AFC. It all conspired to paint the Raiders like the division underdog to win the Super Bowl.

Then there’s the Raiders schedule. The opponents McDaniels will face have a combined record of 152-136-1 (.528 percentage gain), which represents the seventh toughest schedule for an NFL team in 2022.
