Abingdon-Avon football team leads end to end against Iroquois West and advances to quarterfinals


Abingdon-Avon senior Drake DeJaynes scores two points in Saturday’s Class 1A second round playoff game against Iroquois West at Don Viar Memorial Field. The Tornadoes came away with a 55-30 victory over the Raiders.

ABINGDON – The Abingdon-Avon High School football team never lagged behind in their Class 1A second-round playoff game against Iroquois West on Saturday afternoon at Don Viar Memorial Field.

And the Tornadoes came away with a 55-30 win over the Raiders.

With the win, A-Town has now done something he had never done before, and that is to advance to the quarter-finals.

The Tornadoes will hit the road to face the Ridgeview / Lexington Mustangs – who handed Peru St. Bede a 47-20 second-round loss – next weekend.

Abingdon-Avon scored three straight unanswered touchdowns against Iroquis West and made three two-point conversions for a 24-0 lead after the first 12 minutes.

The Tornadoes added two goals in the second quarter while the Raiders scored once, and A-Town led 40-8 at halftime.

A 2-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Easten Schisler with 9:24 left in the fourth gave the Tornadoes a 48-16 advantage.

Senior Drake DeJaynes ran 43 yards for a score with 7:05 left to give Abingdon-Avon a 55-22 lead over Iroquois West.

Raiders’ Trystyn Schacht shot a good jump off an A-Town snap, caught the ball while in the air and dropped it 65 yards with 30.6 seconds on the clock for the final score of the match.

By the numbers

Schisler completed 18 of 25 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 14 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown.

DeJaynes finished with 12 carries for 64 yards, a pair of touchdowns and he ran for two runs twice. DeJaynes also had three catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Parker Darst had four carries for 25 yards and a touchdown, and he had two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown for the Tornadoes.

Senior spreader Clay Slagel had seven receptions for 185 yards and a pair of two-point conversions, and senior Parker Stoneking had three catches for 25 yards and a touchdown for A-Town.
