Essex County Tournament Table, Scores and Schedule

Softball supremacy in Essex County is up for grabs once again with the return of the annual Essex County Softball Tournament.

The 2022 edition of this tournament will be the 44th edition of the tournament. Over the four decades of this tournament, nine different schools have been crowned county champions and 11 different schools have reached the tournament finals.

The 22-team bracket is now available with 10 teams receiving a bye into the preliminary rounds. The remaining 12 teams will all have a qualifying round in order to have one of the final 16 places in the tournament and compete with the top seeds in the county.

Mount St. Dominic has the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Lions have reached the final in nine of the previous 10 tournaments, winning five county titles in the process. With its next title, Mount St. Dominic will tie Caldwell for the most county championships with 10 titles. All of Mount St. Dominic’s final appearances have come since 1995.

The Lions could face a new challenger in the final with Livingston as the No. 2 seed in the group. The Lancers were Group 4 state champions last season and reached the final of the Tournament of Champions. Livingston has reached the county final nine times, but hasn’t since 2013, when the school won their fifth title.

The No. 3 seed belongs to Nutley, who has suffered two of his three losses to Livingston this season. Nutley reached the final of last season’s county tournament before losing on a free kick to Mount St. Dominic. The Raiders are seeking their first county title since 2011.

Cedar Grove is the No. 4 seed, returning among Essex County softball contenders with plenty of key young players. The Panthers are the last public school to win the county title with a win in 2018, followed by a berth in the finals in 2019.

Preliminary round matches must be played no later than Saturday, April 30. The first round of the tournament begins May 4, with the quarter-finals taking place May 7 at 2 p.m. for the top seeds. The semi-final takes place May 13 at Ivy Hill Park in Newark with matches at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., while the final takes place a day later.
