New River CTC Schedule Includes Four State Champions | Sports
The New River Community and Technical College finalized the schedule for the 2022 New River CTC Invitational (NRI) presented by New, Taylor and Associates. In its fourth year, the NRI will bring together 25 high school basketball teams from the area in Beckley for the event which runs January 3-8.
“With the upcoming New River CTC Invitational, we’re welcoming more teams, growing to six days, and teaming up longtime enemies to rekindle a rivalry at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center,” said New River CTC Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and Foundation of Michael Green College.
The event kicks off on Monday, January 3 with the Independence Patriots vs. the Richwood Lumberjacks. The Patriots will return a large group led by seniors Michael McKinney, Carter Adkins, Logan Phalin and Cyrus Goodson. The Princeton Tigers will face the Mount View Golden Knights, followed by the Westside Renegades against the Webster County Highlanders.
Tuesday brings two new teams to the NRI. West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans make their first NRI appearance playing against the PikeView Lady Panthers. Defending State Champion Huntington Lady Highlanders will face the Woodrow Wilson Lady Flying Eagles. Tuesday’s games will end with a boys’ clash of the Huntington Highlanders making their first NRI appearance against the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles.
Defending Class A state champion Man Hillbillies returns to the NRI against the Richwood Lumberjacks on Wednesday. Additional clashes for Wednesday include the PikeView Lady Panthers vs. Spring Valley Lady Timberwolves, Wyoming East Warriors will face the James Monroe Mavericks and Mount View vs. Liberty Raiders.
Talented AJ Williams will lead Liberty against PikeView on Thursday, followed by Spring Valley Lady Timberwolves against Greenbrier East and Princeton Tigers against Huntington Highlanders. Westside vs. Grands Beckley Christian Crusaders will conclude Thursday’s action.
On Friday night, the reigning Class AAA State Champions, the Shady Spring Tigers, return to the NRI, taking on the Section’s nemesis, the Independence Patriots. The Cabell Midland Knights will face NRI quadruple veteran Greenbrier East in one of the main clashes of the weekend. There will also be a clash between the top-ranked women’s teams as the reigning state champion Huntington Lady Highlanders takes on the Cabell Midland Lady Knights.
Saturday’s championship will feature six thrilling clashes highlighted by the Battle of Greenbrier County as Greenbrier East faces the Greenbrier West Cavaliers. The nightcap will pit longtime foes against each other and rekindle the rivalry between the Logan Wildcats and Woodrow Wilson. Saturday’s extra games include Webster County versus James Monroe, Wyoming East versus Greater Beckley Christian, the Cabell Midland Lady Knights versus the Woodrow Wilson Lady Flying Eagles and the Cabell Midland Knights versus the Shady Spring Tigers.
