The wait is over football fans. The NFL is officially back! We may still be about a month and a half away from Week 1, but after a long and sorry offseason, preseason has finally begun for some teams in the league.
Some rookies are already in the heart of training camp
OTAs were earlier this spring, but really other than resistance, not a lot of big headlines come from the ten-day period split between May and June. OTAs, or Organized Team Activities, give players a taste of the new NFL season, but it’s far from training camp. Players train, chat with coaches, and maybe run a few routes, but OTAs are more for making appearances than getting to Xs and Os.
Many teams’ training camps have started at least halfway through. While veterans will have their last days of vacation while rookies will be shown the ropes over the next few days. This applies to almost every team except the Las Vegas Raiders.
Most veterans will be incorporated on July 26, while some of the recruits have already reported to camp. The training camp lasts a few weeks and usually takes place in a city close to where the team is located, if not in that same city.
Hall of Fame Game is August 5
The opening games of the pre-season begin the second week of August. So This means teams will have approximately three weeks to prepare for their first official game of the pre-season.
Some teams meet in pre-season training to play each other in unofficial games, but the three-week pre-season slate begins August 4 when the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars face off in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The other teams in the league will not launch their pre-season campaign until the following week.
