I woke up this morning and it’s true. Davante Adams is a Raider from Las Vegas.

Holy Smoke.

It really happened

Last night, I shared my first thoughts on the blockbuster trade between the Las Vegas Raiders and Green Bay Packers who sent the NFL’s top wide receiver to the Raiders and first- and second-round picks to the Packers

Yet I woke up this morning with more thoughts. Let me unload them on you:

There are a lot of sudden superbowl talk about the Raiders and for good reason. That’s why they made this trade and that’s why they signed Chandler Jones. The Josh McDaniels-Dave Ziegler diet is all in. Rebuild? Nope. They reload.

It’s a league where the teams with the best players win.

Well, the Raiders now have Adams, Derek Carr, Darren Waller, Maxx Crosby, Jones, Hunter Renfrow and Josh Jacobs.

Why not them?

Skeptics talk about the risk of the Adams trade and, yes, there are, indeed, risks. He makes huge amounts of money and the Raiders scrapped the capital draft. At some point, the downside of this deal will surface and the Raiders will feel it. But that’s probably in four or five years.

The recent draft fails and this commitment will affect Las Vegas at some point, but it doesn’t matter if the Raiders win a Super Bowl. It’s like the Los Angeles Rams. All of their crazy spending and trading will eventually catch up, but who cares? Their approach resulted in a Super Bowl.

Now the Raiders are in the same situation. Anything less than Carr and Adams celebrating a Lombardi trophy with a parade down the Strip will be a bust. This trade was not made for the Raiders to finally win a playoff game. It’s about winning it all. This is the expectation and this is the reality.

It is a global movement. Really, McDaniels and Ziegler had no choice.

They know the Kansas City Chiefs having the best quarterback on the planet. They know that Russell Wilson is on the Denver Broncos. They know the super talented Los Angeles Chargers just added Khalil Mack and CJ Jackson. The Raiders had to respond and with Adams and Jones they responded like a leader.

The winner of the AFC West is going to be a bad motherfucker.

But this is only the first task. The Super Bowl is looming and the Raiders know it. So it’s a wonderful opportunity with major consequences if it doesn’t work out for the franchise.

The same goes for Carr.

It’s his turn to answer the call. He has Adams, his close friend and college teammate. He has other weapons. I mean, Adams, Waller and Renfrow? Come on, Carr needs to take the next step in his 31-year-old season. We must put an end to untimely reversals and bad decisions. He has everything in front of him. He has to show that he can be a champion.

The bottom line; No excuses allowed.

Speaking of Waller, he’s going to explode under McDaniels. Did Gronk have a receiving weapon like Adams in New England? The possibilities are limitless.

There should be a minimum of three drinks for this Vegas show,

And let’s not forget the Vegas aspect here. When the Oakland move was announced, I told the fans it would be a game changer. A gorgeous new stadium, prime location would mean the Raiders moving into the NFL’s high-rent neighborhood and moves like this show it. And they will continue to make a splash over the years. But, again, all of that means the Super Bowl is nothing.

This is the new normal for this franchise.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish face one of the toughest tasks a First Four winner has had in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Notre Dame will have a quick turnaround from its double overtime win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to a late afternoon game with the Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday.

Mike Brey’s team must travel from Dayton, Ohio to San Diego overnight and then prepare for the sixth seed Crimson Tide.

Alabama appear to have an ideal draw to defeat the 11th-seeded Irishman, but the Crimson Tide haven’t been too trustworthy this season, and they face a distinct disadvantage against the team. from the ACC who could end the game.

The Wright State Raiders were likely already on their plane to San Diego by the time Notre Dame scored its first victory. They defeated the Bryant Bulldogs on Wednesday to meet the tough challenge of facing the top-seeded Arizona Wildcats during a short rest.

Wright State could stay with the regular-season and Pac-12 Tournament champion for one half, but the Wildcats’ powerhouse offense should end the contest fairly easily.

NCAA Tournament Bracket

Predictions

No. 11 Notre Dame vs. No. 6 Alabama (-4.5)

Alabama has a clear advantage over Notre Dame when it comes to fitness.

The Crimson Tide waited in San Diego while the Irish fought their double overtime battle with Rutgers in Dayton.

Alabama should try to get off to a quick start to test how much Notre Dame has left in its legs.

Although it looks easy, it needs to be hammered home for an inconsistent Alabama team. The Crimson Tide have lost four of their last six games, but they have won over the Arkansas Razorbacks, Baylor Bears and Tennessee Volunteers this season.

The good version of Nate Oats’ team can beat Notre Dame by double digits. Alabama plays at the 12th-fastest pace in the nation and has the eighth-best two-point offense, according to KenPom.

Alabama can pass Notre Dame and tire the ACC team’s legs, but they have to stop one thing from happening.

The Fighting Irish scored more than 50 points in the paint against Rutgers, and Alabama lacks a dominant front-row player.

Notre Dame could use the combination of Nate Laszewski and Paul Atkinson to attack low, or they could call on Prentiss Hubb and Blake Wesley to charge further to the edge.

As long as Alabama limits Notre Dame’s paint production, it should tire the ACC team with its pace and come away with a first-round win.

No. 16 Wright State vs. No. 1 Arizona (over 156.5)

Wright State proved in their first-four win over Bryant that they have no problem moving around the court.

The Raiders produced 93 points Wednesday night, and they need similar production to match one of the most successful teams in the country.

Arizona is playing at the eighth fastest adjusted tempo, according to KenPom. He has the fifth-ranked two-point offense and sits 10th in effective field goal percentage.

The Wildcats eclipsed the 80-point mark in each of their three Pac-12 tournament wins in Las Vegas last weekend. Tommy Lloyd’s team has scored less than 80 points in a win once in its last 12 wins, so if Arizona beats Wright State as expected, they should be closer to the 90-point mark.

Arizona’s defense hasn’t been spectacular when it comes to point concessions lately. He has allowed five of his last nine opponents to score over 75 points.

It’s a positive sign for the Wright State offense which is trying to stay somewhat close to the Wildcats.

Wright State may have a better chance against Arizona in the first half as their adrenaline rush from Wednesday’s win carries through to Friday night.

The Horizon League champion could encounter some fatigue in the second half, which could allow Arizona to increase the score in the final 20 minutes and help the overshoot.

The NFL’s legal tampering period in free agency is set to begin in a few hours, so rumors about the Las Vegas Raiders and the league’s other 31 teams are already growing. It’s no secret that the Raiders need a wide receiver this offseason, and with Davante Adams earning the franchise tag last week, ex-Chicago Bears wide Allen Robinson is one of the biggest names in the market.

Robinson has 495 career catches for 6,409 yards and 40 touchdowns over his eight-year career, and it came as he struggled with injuries and less than stellar quarterback play. He was limited to 10 games as a rookie with a stress fracture in his foot, played a quarterback in 2017 before torn an ACL and a hamstring injury limited him to 12 games last season. As for the callers he’s had to work with, it’s a combination of Blake Bortles, Mitch Trubisky, and several other disappointing names.

Thing is, Robinson’s numbers at this point are even more impressive given the context of his career, so it’s completely understandable that the Raiders are interested in him, and NFL Network Ian Rapoport confirmed it on Sunday.

“The New York Jets, Detroit Lions and Las Vegas Raiders are among teams that could be “in the mix” to sign Robinson, per Rapoport… the Cleveland Browns are also a team to watch.

“…When it comes to the Raiders, Robinson could potentially be the last piece to turn Las Vegas’ receiving body into a great body as it currently features tight ends. Darren Waller and standout slot receiver Renfrow Hunter. It would also give Robinson the chance to play with Derek Carrwho would be by far the best and most statistically accomplished QB of Robinson’s career.

Carr would no doubt welcome a talent like Robinson on the outside, especially since it looks like the door is closed to reunite with his college teammate, but it looks like the Raiders will have some competition for the eight-year-old vet.

For what it’s worth, New York has the most efficient cap space of the teams listed above at around $35.4 million per OverTheCap.com, while Las Vegas is second at around $26.7 million, Detriot is third at around $14.2 million, and Cleveland is in the hole at around $7.9 million. Also, the Browns just traded for former Raider Amari Cooper, so they could be a long shot for Robinson.

Pro Football Focus is pricing a 3-year, $48 million deal for the former Bear, so it looks like Silver and Black will have a shot at landing one of the best wide receivers in the open market. We’ll still have to wait and see how it all pans out.

The Las Vegas Raiders signed star defensive end Maxx Crosby to a four-year extension worth about $95 million on Thursday in the first major personnel move under coach Josh McDaniels’ new regime. and General Manager Dave Ziegler.

The Raiders locked Crosby up before he entered the final year of his rookie contract with the new contract signed on Friday two years to the day that he got sober after abusing alcohol.

Rewarding Crosby with overtime is a far different start than what happened with the Raiders four years ago when new coach Jon Gruden traded star rusher Khalil Mack after he was unable to agree on an overtime.

“Maxx Crosby exemplifies the characteristics of a Raider,” McDaniels said in a statement. “His work ethic and leadership are second to none and we are delighted that he will continue to be an important part of this organization for years to come.”

Crosby is coming off his best season

Crosby secured a deal that pays him just below the top tier of the edge rusher market, which is led by TJ Watt, Joey Bosa and Myles Garrett.

Crosby is coming off his best season by far since being drafted in the fourth round from Eastern Michigan in 2019. Crosby became the third player since PFF began tracking data in 2006 to record at least 100 pressures from quarterback in one season, joining JJ Watt and Aaron Donald.

Crosby had eight sacks and 30 quarterback hits in the regular season and another sack in a playoff loss at Cincinnati. This helped him earn second-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl selection.

In three seasons, Crosby has totaled 25 sacks.

The AFC West is already loaded and the Las Vegas Raiders find themselves playing catch-up. The front office made a big decision on Maxx Crosby on Friday, locking him up for the next four years. It’ll be interesting to see what else this franchise can do this offseason, but for now, it’s Crosby’s time to shine.

According to Tom Pelissero, the Raiders have extended Maxx Crosby to a four-year contract worth $98.8 million. After playing as one of the best passing throwers in the league, Crosby takes home a whopping $53 million guaranteed. The sky is the limit for Las Vegas’ best defensive player.

After signing the deal, Maxx Crosby took to social media to share his reaction with fans. It’s a huge moment for the Raiders pass thrower as he becomes the centerpiece of the defense for the next few years. Considering Las Vegas has to play Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Russell Wilson twice a year each, it’s a necessary decision for this franchise.

Maxx Crosby has one of the best comeback stories of all time. After battling addiction issues, the star pass thrower cleaned himself up and quickly became one of the best defensive linemen in the league. If anyone deserves this payday, it’s Crosby and it’s good to see the Raiders rewarding him for his efforts.

We’ll see what other moves the Raiders make this offseason. They will face a tough climb next year with AFC West acquiring several superstars. However, as long as the front office maintains a competent roster, Las Vegas should stay in contention for the playoffs next year. Look to the front office to get aggressive in free agency and add valuable assets through the NFL Draft.

The Las Vegas Raiders introduced new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi and special teams coach Tom McMahon to the media Friday morning.

Here are some thoughts on each coach’s remarks:

Graham:

He was extremely affable and I think will be much more quoted than the more cautious Josh McDaniels.

As expected, Graham downplayed the importance of playing a 4-3 or 3-4 defense. He even called these alignments “outdated”. He emphasized the importance of sub-defenses and noted that often NFL defenses are 4-2-5 defense. “It’s a 4-2-5 world,” Graham joked. He made it clear that having five good defensive backs is essential.

Graham said he doesn’t necessarily need to track down former players during free agency. He just wants to train good players. “Give us good players, we’re ready to go,” Graham said. He did, however, note that he had coached Raiders free agent Johnathan Hankins in the past.

Graham has been impressed with the energy he has already felt while chatting with passing throwers Maxx Crosby and Yannick Ngakoue and he is delighted to see them on the training ground.

Lombardy:

The first-time offensive coordinator said it was important for him to have “humility” in his new role and to ask for help when needed. He also said that several Raiders staff coaches have been very helpful in the transition to his new role.

Lombardi’s father, Mike, was a Raiders personnel manager under the late Al Davis and he said he “grew up” as a Raider. He is delighted to wear silver and black.

McMahon:

He’s thrilled with the luxury of having a peerless specialist trio of kicker Daniel Carlson, Pro-Bowl punter AJ Cole and long snapper Trent Sieg already in place. He compared it to when he had kicker Adam Vinatieri, punter Pat McAfee and snapper Matt Overton in Indianapolis.

McMahon praised the work of former Raiders special teams coach Rich Bisaccia and said his unit will have the same “strain” as Bisaccia’s unit. McMahon used the word “strain” a lot. It basically means effort.

Seeing a Raider inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in person is a bucket list item for many Raider Nation fans.

On Friday, you can take the first step to making it a reality when tickets for the 2022 Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony go on sale. Tickets go on sale at 7:00 a.m. PT Friday and can be purchased here.

Of course, legendary Raiders wide receiver Cliff Branch is part of the 2022 Hall of Fame class. Branch, who was on all three Raiders superbowl-winning teams, died in August 2019 at the age of 71. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 6 at 12 p.m. ET.

An added incentive to make the trip to Canton, Ohio this weekend is the fact that the Raiders will be playing the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Hall of Fame game there on Thursday, August 4. New Raiders coach Josh McDaniels will make his Las Vegas debut at the same stadium he played in his high school games with his father, Thom, as coach.

It will be a great weekend for this community.

Until Derek Carr signs a contract extension with the Las Vegas Raiders, expect his name to be tied to needy NFL teams. Do not worry. That’s how it’s gonna be until pen comes to paper on a new contract.

So, it’s no surprise to read or hear Carr’s name thrown around these days.

The new commanders in Washington, for example, are taking a effortless approach at quarterback. There are even wild insinuations that commanders offered an unholy package of first-round picks to land Seattle Seahawks signal caller Russell Wilson. If Washington were to look in the wilderness, they would find a quarterback in a very manageable final year of a five-year, $125 million deal.

But then again, there is a very large cloud of uncertainty surrounding any team looking to acquire Carr. The Raiders franchise quarterback made it known he would rather not retire than wear another uniform in the NFL. This makes any business DOA perhaps.

Flip it over to the Raiders side and you’ll see why the team is in no rush to make an expansion as soon as possible. Carr’s final cap number in 2022 isn’t of the crippling variety ($19.877 million and up) and he’s within the team’s control this season β€” extension or not. While this piece isn’t top echelon quarterback money (this cap number ranks 15th among signal callers for 2022), it’s a decent amount nonetheless. With that in mind, Vegas head coach Josh McDaniels didn’t lie when he said Carr would undoubtedly be the Week 1 starter this coming season. It’s not like Carr is the recalcitrant type if he doesn’t get a contract extension.

I wrote recently that the Raiders’ best move is to extend Carr to a short-term extension, whether that happens this season, in-season or after the 2022 campaign.

Let’s move on to Quick Slants:

  • It looks like Vegas is going to expand a key roster before giving the quarterback additional years. The Raiders are in contract talks with defensive end Maxx Crosby and a source has told The Athletic’s Vic Tafur that the rusher’s new deal could come before Carr’s extension. Crosby played in all 49 games in his first three NFL seasons and racked up 25 career sacks as he became a go-to pass thrower since being taken in the fourth round of 2019. NFL Draft. It looks like $20 million per season could be the going rate, as that mark would put Crosby just below Frank Clark in the top six on average per year.

Only Raiders owner Mark Davis, right, knows how much the team will shell out for contract extensions with Maxx Crosby and others.

  • Las Vegas general manager Dave Zielger and his staff likely won’t get much rest as we head into free agency (the legal tampering period begins next week) and the draft. Ziegler and his team need to learn about the Raiders’ roster up and down, then sift through free agents and college prospects.

“There’s not a lot of sleep, that’s for sure,” Ziegler told the Combine NFL Last week. β€œLearning (our) list is the centerpiece of Scouting. So it took a lot of time and effort. When you rate every guy under contract and every free agent, there are a lot of players to rate as well as all the new things you face when you take one of those positions…so it’s a ton of time management.”

  • the New England Patriots removed Kyle Van Noy on Monday to create $5 million in cap space. If Vegas were to find his way, the veteran linebacker could provide system knowledge, depth and more pass juice.
  • Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku and Cincinnati Bengals Safety Jessie Bates III was the first two players to get slapped with the franchise tag on Monday. Tags give both teams more time to negotiate long-term deals.
  • Eliminate Calvin Ridley from the NFL this upcoming season. the Atlanta Falcons the wide receiver left the team to deal with his mental health and a league investigation found he bet on NFL games for a five-day period in November. As such, he has been suspended indefinitely for the 2022 campaign.
  • With the Browns turning down the option for Andy Janovich, he and Patrick Ricard are the two best unrestricted free agent options on the market. The Raider are likely to revamp their own with Alec Ingold, however, Ricard and Janovich should be worth a look for Vegas – one of the few teams that deploy a proper fullback.
  • The 40-yard rush times at the combine were a telltale sign of who the Raiders would draft when legendary owner Al Davis captained the ship. Watching last week’s moments in the interest of Indy and Davis would surely have been piqued. Baylor cornerback Kaylon Barnes had the fastest run at 4.23 seconds, with 14 of the best times being defensive backs or wide receivers. Then there is Amare Barno at 15 with a run of 4.36. By the way, he is a 6-foot-5, 246-pound defensive end.
  • Social media was abuzz with the combined performance of Georgian defensive tackle Jordan Davis. his 4.78 40 was telling as the Prospects are 6-foot-6 and weigh 341 pounds. He’s being compared to Ted Washington, but I doubt Big Ted would have beaten Davis’ 40-yard sprint time.

For those in the City of Brotherly Love looking for some football this spring, the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars will be in action starting April 17. Their 2022 calendar dropped today, so here’s what you need to know about the Stars and their slate.

The Stars’ head coach and general manager is Bart Andrus. His head coaching resume spans the gamut of football, with stints in college, NFL Europe, CFL and XFL. He also spent time as an offensive coach for the Titans and Rams in the NFL.

Case Cookus and Bryan Scott are the Stars quarterbacks. Cookus was a very productive QB at the FCS level as he had over 12,000 passing yards and 105 touchdowns in five seasons in northern Arizona. Two of those seasons were cut short due to injury. He was waived by the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of the 2021 season. Scott threw for over 9,000 yards and nearly 80 touchdowns for Occidental College at the Division III level.
