5 teams with the toughest schedules to avoid

There is a moment in every fantasy football draft where managers are forced to decide between two players. This uncertainty can sometimes be paralyzing when there is seemingly no clear answer.

That’s when the strength of the fantasy football calendar can help. It’s not something to start making tentative decisions on, but it’s useful when you need to break a link between similar options.

With that in mind, here are the five teams with the toughest schedule strength for fantasy football in 2022, according to data from FantasyPros.

The Kansas Chiefs are expected to face some of last season’s best defenses this year. Kansas City attracts the Buffalo Bills in 2022 after finishing as the No. 1 team in the Football Outsiders DVOA defensive metric. They face five other teams (Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams) who were also in the DVOA top 10, making it a glove for Patrick Mahomes in his first season without Tyrek Hill.

Playing in the NFC West does the Los Angeles Rams a disservice in 2022. They will face the 49ers and Cardinals a total of four times after both finished last season in the top 7 DVOA teams. The Bills, Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints (No. 3 in DVOA in 2021) are also on the schedule. FantasyPros rated this schedule as two stars (out of five) in terms of ease for the Rams’ RB and WR groups, which might be bad news for those spending early draft capital on Cooper Kupp (average draft position #4 overall) and Cam Akers (ADP 35).

A lot of the Rams’ shots are shared by the Cardinals given they share the same division. However, Arizona is also drawing a date with the New England Patriots that LA won’t have in 2022. New England was the No. 4 team in the DVOA and allowed the second-under fantastic points per game in 2021. The Rams and Cardinals share SOS ratings for RB, WR and TE, but Arizona’s two-star QB rating (compared to three stars for Los Angeles) means Kyler Murray should have another spell harder than Matthew Stafford this year.

The New York Jets’ 2022 schedule is a disaster. New York has two of the league’s three one-star ratings for schedules this season, and they hold two key positions (QB/WR). AFC East plans to be a bloodbath for the Jets’ offense as they play a total of six games against the Bills, Patriots and Miami Dolphins, all of whom finished in the DVOA’s top 10 Last year. The only saving grace is a four-star schedule in terms of ease for RBs, but it could be a long year for Zach Wilson and his group of wides.

There are few bright spots on the Las Vegas Raiders’ 2022 schedule. While the Jets had a silver lining in RB, Las Vegas boasts a two-star rating on the top four fantasy positions (QB/RB/WR/TE). Drawing the dreaded NFC West has already been highlighted as a major hurdle, but the Raiders also face the Patriots, Saints, Indianapolis Colts (No. 8 in 2021 DVOA) and Tennessee Titans (No. 12). That means they will face seven of the top 12 defenses by DVOA last season. It will certainly be an uphill battle for Davante Adams (ADP 11), Josh Jacobs (ADP 43) and Darren Waller (ADP 46) to live up to their currently lofty average draft positions.
